Description:
Compulsory retirement at a fixed age is having the effect of removing from useful activities large numbers of energetic men and women with knowledge, skills and experience drawn from all aspects of society. Generally retired people are excluded from the mainstream of daily life. Retirement tends to be perceived by society as a period characterised by passivity, social with, drawal, and physical and mental decline. Many elderly people accept this perception partly because of ideas inherited from the past. A new perception of retirement is needed to replace the negative one prevalent at the present time. There is need to create a new environment for retirement: an environment in which elderly people can use their energy, skills and experience according to their abilities and their desires. (Section 2).
