Description:
The overall objective of this formulary is to achieve rational use of medicines through safe, cost-effective prescribing. Towards this end the formulary sets out - (I) to encourage the prescribing of medicines only where they are essential; (2) to provide an appropriate choice of medicine for t:le treatment of complaints presented by the majority of patients in the course of medical practice; (3) to be a practical, speedy and useful reference source for prescribers; (4) to encourage the use of non-proprietary (i.e. generic) names in prescribing except in the case of those preparations presenting bioavailability problems, where the particular manufacturers' or brand names may be used.
