The terms of reference of the committee were:- "to examine the existing arrangements for consultant level services in all branches of laboratory medicine at the children's hospitals in Dublin, taking account of any national implications and, following consultation with the institutional, professional and other interests involved, to make recommendations to the Comhairle on the number, type, and structuring of consultant appointments which will be necessary for the development of paediatric pathology including, where appropriate, linkage arrangements between the children'S hospitals and the laboratory services provided in the major general hospitals and other special hospitals (e. g . maternity and cancer hospitals) in the Dublin area".
