Clear procedures should exist in each area regarding referral to each component of the mental health services. Such procedures should be available to general practitioners in the area. In all instances, referrals through primary care services are considered best practice. In circumstances where this does not take place, prompt contact with the patient's general practitioner is advisable as soon as possible.
