During 2011 PCRS handled almost 78 million transactions, over 2.8 million more than 2010. These were services provided to 3.4 million people in their community by doctors, Pharmacists, Dentists and Optometrists, at a total cost of €2.5bn. This makes up approximately 18% of the HSE’s overall spend. At the end of 2011 more than 1.7 million people held medical cards. This is almost 37% of the population, and represents a 47% increase over 2005. It is the highest number of people ever recorded with medical cards. In addition more than 120,000 people, approximately 2.7% of the population, held GP Visit Cards.
