This development strategy for the Southern and Eastern Region is prepared as an input to the 2000-2006 National Plan. The overall national objectives of this Plan have been stated as being to: • "enhance the economy's productive potential • contribute to continuing growth in sustainable employment and to the reintegration of the long-term unemployed, and those at risk of becoming so, into the economic mainstream • contribute to a balanced geographic distribution of economic activity which is consistent with maximising national economic growth." These overarching objectives are supplemented by a series of additional national priorities: l. increasing national and regional competitiveness ll. promoting sustainable growth and employment lll. implementing the National Employment Action Plan lV. promoting social inclusion V. increasing north-south co-operation
