| Description: | Mental health is a prerequisite for normal growth and development. Most children and adolescents have good mental
health, but studies have shown that 1 in 10 children and adolescents suffer from mental health disorders severe
enough to cause impairment. Mental health disorders in children and young people can damage self-esteem and
relationships with their peers, undermine school performance, and reduce quality of life, not only for the child or
young person, but also for their parents or carers and families. The majority of illness burden in childhood and more
so in adolescence, is caused by mental health disorders. Mental health disorders in childhood are the most powerful
predictor of mental health disorders in adulthood. |
