The total number of patients suffering from mental disorder under care on 31st December, 1949, in public and private establishments was 19,924. The following table shows the distribution of the different classes of patients in the district and auxiliary mental hospitals and in the private, private charitable and authorised institutions, together with the numbers in public assistance institutions, in Court care in unregistered houses, and in the Central Criminal Lunatic Asylum, Dundrum on the 31st December 1949. and on the 31st December. 1948. There was an increase of 450 in the number within official cognisance on 31st December. 1949 as compared with the number on 31st December. 1948. The number of patients in the public mental hospitals increased by 483 and in private mental institutions increased by 3 while the number of patients in public assistance institutions. in Court care and in the Central Criminal Lunatic Asylum decreased by 22 10 and 4 respectively.
