| Description: | The development of psychiatric services in Ireland has mirrored the
developments taking place internationally. There has been a move from
institutional to community care and a marked decline in hospitalised
morbidity. This decline has resulted primarily from the reduction in numbers
of long-stay patients. At the same time, however, admissions t o mental
hospitals have risen substantially, placing- considerable pressure on acute
psychiatric beds. A phenomenon has developed of rapid turnover, with a
cycle of readmission, short length of stay and often-premature discharge,
leading to further readmissions. As a result, services for patients can be
unduly determined by availability of bed resources. |
