The South Eastern Health Board is the statutory authority for providing health and personal social services to the people of counties Carlow, Kilkenny, Tipperary (SR), Wexford and of Waterford City and County. The population of the area (1986 Census) is 384,657. Services are provided as follows (a) community medical, nursing, social and income maintenance services provided by personnel based in local health centres or working from their own practice premises throughout the region, including family doctors and pharmacists, public health doctors and nurses, social workers, therapists and health inspectors. (b) general hospital services at the regional hospital in Waterford and in general hospitals in Wexford, Kilkenny and Cashel/Clonmel , supported by a number of small district hospitals. (c) special hospital services for psychiatrically ill, for mentally handicapped and for old persons, mainly in institutions owned and managed by the Board, supported by institutions provided by voluntary and religious groups, and by services in the community such as day centres, visiting nurses, community residences etc. These three groups of services are managed on behalf of the Board by programme managers working with the chief executive officer and supported by functional officers responsible for the functions of finance, personnel , management services and technical services , all based at the Board's Head office in Kilkenny.
