| Description: | At a meeting held on 28 May 1979 between the Minister for Health and
representatives of the Irish Medical Association and the Medical Union,
in connection with a proposal to introduce a sight testing scheme, it was
agreed to set up a small working group which could examine the possibility
of extending permanent status to any of the Ophthalmologists who had long
term temporary employment with health boards as County Ophthalmologists
and who were in that capacity devoting a considerable part of their time
to the provision of services for their boards .
The aim in extending permanent status to the temporary ophthalmologists in
question is to enable them to acquire pension and other benefits under the
superannuation code for pensionable officers of local authorities including health boards |
