In 1999 over £2.5 billion was spent by the eight Health Boards which administered public health services on a regional basis throughout the country. The income of Boards was approximately £200m. With the establishment of the Eastern Regional Health Authority (ERHA) in 2000 which will have the additional task of administering funding of voluntary hospitals in the Eastern Region the level of funding passing through the Boards and the new Authority will increase substantially.
