Description: This Report sets out recommendations and guidelines for the development of health education programmes in second-level schools in the Mid-west. Region. It examines the role of the family, and the school, appropriate content areas, and the most suitable methodology and structures to be employed It sets down a framework which is appropriate to the needs and values of the Region. The publication of this report is timely in view of recent government announcements on health education/promotion and especially in view of the current debate which has arisen with the publication of the consultative document on health entitled "Health - The Wider Dimensions" from which it is noted that. "Health Education will continue to play a vital role in equipping people with the knowledge to make healthy choices." The Committee is confident that this report will contribute to the development of health education in the Mid-West region. It trusts that it will enable schools to help their pupils to become responsible citizens; to see themselves as part of the fabric of society, touching and being touched by these around them, and the environment. In this way, it. is hoped that young people will take reponsibility for their own health and for that of the community.
