Description: This report provides information on all admissions, discharges and deaths occurring within the inpatient psychiatric service in Ireland for the year 1990. Data on admissions first admissions, discharges and deaths are reported firstly for the country as a whole, secondly by health board area of origin of patient, then by individual hospital and finally by hospital type. A range of classificatory variables is used in presenting the data I.e . gender, age, marital status, socio-economic group, voluntary/ non-voluntary status, diagnosis and length of stay. Selected findings and trends are commented on. The report is one of a series of annual reports of patient movement produced by the Mental Health Section of The Health Research Board and its predecessor the Medico-Social Research Board. As part of its epidemiological work in the mental health area, The Health Research Board, in addition maintains four Psychiatric Case Registers and carries out censuses of the psychiatric inpatient population from time to time. The Psychiatric Case Registers are maintained in association with St. Loman's Hospital Dublin, the Carlow-South Kildare, Roscommon and Westmeath mental health services. A complete listing of on-going publications from the Mental Health Section of The Health Research Board is produced in Appendix
