| Description: | Until 1963 information about the activities of Irish psychiatric hospitals was
published annually in the report of the Inspector of Mental Hospitals. The
published information consisted in the main of cross-sectional data concerning
admissions, deaths and discharges from hospital. On 31st March, 1963,
at the behest of the Commission of Enquiry on Mental Illness which had been
set up by the Minister for Health in 1961, an individual statistical reporting
system for in-patients was introduced commencing with a census of all patients
in psychiatric hospitals on that date. The results of that census have been
recently published (Walsh, 1971). In addition an analysis of admission and
discharge data for the first complete year of operation of the system has also
appeared (Walsh and Walsh, 1970).
Responsibility for the National Psychiatric In-patient Reporting System was
transferred from the Department of Health to the Medico-Social Research
Board early in 1970. The Board than decided to improve the system and to
introduce the technique of record linkage so that, in addition to cross-sectional
information on psychiatric hospital activities, longitudinal studies of cohorts of
patients could be undertaken and the new National Psychiatric In-patient
Reporting System was introduced with a census of all patients in hospitals and
units on 31st March, 1971. |
