Description: At the request of, and following consultation with the Department of Health , the Comhairle , in January , 1988 , established a small internal committee comprised of two of its members and the Chief Officer , with the following terms of reference:- "Having due regard to the overall allocation of specialist units within the major general hospitals , to examine the existing arrangements for neuro-surgical services in the Dublin area and, following consultation with the interests concerned, to make recommendations to the Comhairle on the future organisation and development of neuro-surgery in the context of the neuro-sciences group of specialties . The study should take into account the national/regional character of the neurosurgical services in Dublin, and the necessity for an effective and efficient service within the over-all financial constraints which are likely to continue to apply to the health services in general " .
