Description:
The work of the Council in supporting research continues to evolve. The research unit programme started in 1979 and will have completed one full cycle when three of the initial units - Coeliac Disease in University College, Galway, Alcohol in Trinity College, Dublin and Hypertension in University College, Cork - come to an end in December, 1985. In anticipation of this the Council invited new applications in July. The initial response indicates considerable interest among medical scientists. The successful units will be named in mid-1985 so as to allow time to get the programme underway in January, 1986. During the year under review one unit - Drugs in the Elderly under the direction of Professor Kevin O'Malley - was funded. This unit was initially approved in 1982. The Council has been aware for some years that new accommodation was required for its laboratories in Trinity College, Dublin. This was necessitated by the building programme in the College. Fortunately it was possible to arrange with the College for the MRC group to be accommodated in the Department of Chemistry. This section of the department has been completely renovated and the transfer to the new accommodation was underway at the year's end. The Council wishes to express its gratitude to Trinity College for their collaboration in this project.
