Number of Children in Care There were 2885 children in care at 31 December 1990. This represents an increase of 4.68% on the number in care on the same date in 1989, which was 2756. Type of Care Of the 2885 children 2084 (72.2%) were in foster care and 756 (26.2%) were in residential care. The comparable percentages for 1989 were 71.8% in foster care and 26.6% in residential care. Legal Basis 1382 (47.9%) of the 2885 children were in care on a voluntary basis; 1503 children (52.2%) were in care under court orders. Primary Reason for Admission "Parent or parents unable to cope" was the most frequent reason for admission at 30.5% (879 children). The next largest categories were 'Neglect' at 19 . 9% (575 children) and 'Parental illness ' at 11.9% (342 children). Age of Children Over 40% (1157) of the children were over 12 years, of whom 401 or 13.9% of the total were 16 years and over. Length of Stay 700 children (2 4.3%) were in care for less than 2 years, 1642 ch1'ldren (57%) were in care between 2 and 10 years and 543 children (18.8%) were in care for over 10 years.
