National Council for the Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery: newsletter: Autumn 2002: issue 7

Title: National Council for the Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery: newsletter: Autumn 2002: issue 7
Authors: National Council for the Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery
Description: In this newsletter we celebrate the accreditation of the first ever
Advanced Nurse Practitioner (Emergency), Ms Valerie Small, of St
James’s Hospital. She provides us with an insight into her role, the
development of the role in a busy acute hospital setting and its
effectiveness for patients. At the same time, we can announce the
approval of site preparation and job descriptions for Advanced
Nurse Practitioner (Sexual Health) and two Advanced Nurse
Practitioners (Emergency) at St James’s Hospital. These are in
themselves quite historic events in the development of nursing and
midwifery in Ireland.
As promised in our last newsletter, we are devoting part of this
newsletter to the Health Strategy document Quality and Fairness — A
Health System for You. This document is of central importance to
every health professional in Ireland and it is essential that in nursing
and midwifery we are fully familiar with its implications for the
development of our profession. We commence our analysis of the
document in this edition with an overview of the central themes, in
particular, the guiding principles, the national goals and the
frameworks for change.

The vital link: operating department nursing in Ireland

Title: The vital link: operating department nursing in Ireland
Authors: Irish Nurses Organisation. Operating Theatre Nurses Section
Description: The timing of the launch of this book is critical when the hidden intervention of
nursing needs to be identified. In today's world of health and ill health, costs need to
be accounted for: this must never be at the expense of patient care at any level.
Anyone who had doubts in relation to quality patient care being met in a cost effective
manner will have these doubts dispelled on reading this book.
Every hospital library should have at least one copy, every theatre should hold a copy,
the book should be mandatory reading for all student nurses. It is a source of
reference and philosophy for those interested in working in the operating department.

Policy on bullying: a programme for positive action

Title: Policy on bullying: a programme for positive action
Authors: Irish Nurses Organisation
Description: Bullying in the workplace, regardless of who bullies who, is now
well recognised as a form of harassment. As with all forms of
harassment, bullying is totally unacceptable and there is no
excuse for any worker, regardless of their position, treating a
colleague worker with anything less than their due dignity.
This booklet is issued for members of the Irish Nurses
Organisation and anyone interested in ensuring that the nurse's
working environment is to be free from bullying.
As in our 1993 'Bill of Rights for Nurses and Midwives', we
exhort employers, nurse managers and all others, to work
together to draw up and give effect to a positive statement, and
to set guidelines, which will ensure that each nurse at work
treats her/his colleagues (nursing and others) with the respect
and dignity which one mature individual is expected to show to
another in any healthy and interchanging environment.
