Cognitive behavioural skills for practice a model for delivery in the Irish mental health service

Title: Cognitive behavioural skills for practice a model for delivery in the Irish mental health service

Authors: O'Shea, James; Goff, Paul; Gillespie, Kate

Description: This publication outlines a model of delivery for introductory level CognitiveBehavioural Therapy (CBT) training in the Mental Health Service, HSE South(Carlow, Kilkenny, South Tipperary, Waterford, Wexford). This model has proveduseful in guiding the development of four introductory programmes during 2009and 2010. As a result of this experience, we have amended and updated ourprogramme delivery strategies. We see this process as organic and everchanging, thus these reflections are a snap shot of our current thinking which wehave no doubt will evolve as we proceed with future programmes. This bookletwill act as a guide for our upcoming programmes in 2010 and 2011 and webelieve it may also offer guidance to others who will be involved in the delivery ofCBT training within the Irish Mental Health Service.

Most children andadolescents have good mental health, but studies have shown that 1 in 10 children andadolescents suffer from mental health disorders severe enough to cause impairment.Mental health disorders in children and young people can damage self-esteem andrelationships with their peers, undermine school performance, and reduce quality of life, not only for the child or young person, but also for their parents or carers and families. The majority of illness burden in childhood and more so in adolescence, is caused bymental health disorders. Mental health disorders in childhood are the most powerfulpredictor of mental health disorders in adulthood.
